how ?

simply use a black and white graphic image as the highlight for your objects
and layer these 3d objects along the depth axis

That technique makes a very interesting detailed design, will have to give it a go!

this time creating a pen and wash look by using only one image.

first inflate it (or curvy map it ) (aim to get low relief, quite smooth)
then use same image as base color
base light
and highlight
