tried a few things here
the figure was made by quick merging about ten pretty random lathes
then pulling it into shape with widgit move
applied a pattern curvy map
warp expanded over that patterned mesh
exported mesh to make low-poly using meshlab
texture gels on the bryce lights

the render took less than a minute

i think the lower legs and the back of the head are starting to get interesting
arms and face would need some more work :roll:

I love the lumpy bark like shapes here - melted and crusty. I guess the fine detail is a bryce texture? The surface triggers a lot of of ideas - Elaborate shells would be easy with curvy maps.
