By placing an image on a curvy shaped loft and using an alpha channel( i used pd_particles to draw the image)
we can use 2d painting to get very quick renders in a 3d world (i used bryce)
rendered with blended transparency using alpha channel

Cool, I thought you had placed lots of small lofts, but you got the whole effect from one long loft. Good use of alphas.
