Advice for total beginners

Start simple and have some fun building up your skills.
a few lathe lines and some standard objects are all you need.
flood fill your objects with the paint tools.
The help manual should have enough info to do that.
learn to render your scene in curvy first.
it will teach you some of the basics of lighting and materials.
a very quick curvy render, i loaded a background image before the render.
simple cubes and stretched sphere with diffuse picture
don't be frightened to have a play and develop your own style.
these are just lathes and a sphere.
