Modeling an AK-47 in Curvy 3D

Post by Simon »

I had fun sketching this gun out of lots of primitives. As well as the normal cylinder, box and slabs - I used several Lathes that were further shaped with Mesh/Deform/Trim Surface.

Creating a detailed and realistic AK-47 in Curvy 3D is a process that combines precision, layering, and sculpting techniques. The AK-47, known for its rugged design and reliability, requires careful attention to mechanical details, proportions, and textures to achieve an accurate 3D model.

Key Steps in the Modeling Process

1. Blocking Out the Base Shape
- Using Curvy’s sketch-based modeling, the rifle’s frame, barrel, and stock are outlined with simple curves.
- Soft move tools help refine the proportions, ensuring the AK-47 maintains its iconic silhouette.

2. Sculpting the Mechanical Details
- Voxel merge is used to integrate the trigger, magazine, and iron sights seamlessly.
- Boolean operations allow for precise cutouts and engravings, ensuring the model reflects the real-world firearm’s complexity.

3. Texturing & Finishing Touches
- Metallic textures are applied to the barrel and receiver, giving the rifle a battle-worn look.
- Wood grain effects are added to the stock and grip, enhancing realism.
- Lightmaps and specular highlights ensure the surfaces reflect light naturally, making the model feel authentic and functional.

Conclusion

Modeling an AK-47 in Curvy 3D is a rewarding challenge that requires attention to detail, sculpting precision, and realistic texturing. The combination of sketch-based modeling, voxel merging, and adaptive sculpting makes it possible to create a high-quality, game-ready asset.

I saw that on youtube. That trim tool would be a real time saver. When is that coming to try?

What’s better than an M4 Carbine? An M4 Carbine with an M203 Grenade Launcher strapped underneath! Using Curvy 3D, I crafted this battle-ready beast, ensuring every detail—from the sleek rifle frame to the intimidating grenade launcher—looked tactical, powerful, and ready for action.

The real challenge? Making sure it looked like it could handle anything—whether it’s precision shooting or launching explosive surprises. With voxel merge and adaptive sculpting, I refined the barrel, grip, and trigger, ensuring it had that military-grade perfection
