Sculpting Starbug in Curvy 3D—Because Space Travel Should Look Fun

Ah, Starbug—the plucky little green spaceship from Red Dwarf, forever dodging disaster and proving that size isn’t everything when it comes to intergalactic misadventures. Naturally, I had to sculpt it in Curvy 3D, because what better way to honor sci-fi’s most lovable bug than by bringing it to life in glorious 3D?

Step 1: The Buggy Blueprint
Starbug’s design is delightfully quirky—round, bulbous, and unmistakably insectoid. Using Curvy 3D’s sketch-based modeling, I started with simple spheres, stacking and merging them like a futuristic space caterpillar.

Step 2: Adding the Sci-Fi Charm
- Legs & Landing Gear: Because every bug needs legs, I sculpted the landing struts with soft move tools, ensuring they had that sturdy-yet-wobbly Starbug feel.
- Cockpit Windows: Using voxel merge, I carved out the iconic front windows, making sure they had just the right amount of “we’re-about-to-crash” personality.
- Surface Details: Panels, vents, and tiny mechanical bits were sculpted using adaptive subdivision, keeping the model crisp without overloading it with polygons.

Step 3: Painting the Bug Green
No Starbug is complete without its signature green hull, so I used Curvy’s texture painting tools to get that perfect shade of “slightly battered but still spaceworthy.” A few specular highlights added that well-worn, “we’ve been through some stuff” look.

Step 4: Final Touches & Rendering
Once the sculpt was complete, I posed Starbug in a dramatic space scene, ready to dodge asteroids, flee from GELFs, or just hover awkwardly while Lister complains about dinner.

Conclusion
Curvy 3D made sculpting Starbug a blast—its intuitive tools, sketch-based modeling, and adaptive sculpting turned a handful of spheres into a fully realized sci-fi icon. Now, the real question is: should I sculpt Red Dwarf next, or maybe a holographic Rimmer?

Have you tried 3d printing any of the files from Curvy yet?
Just bought a Bambu A1 myself.
