It would be easy enough to make a combined cut+extrude tool to add simple details all at once... might try that later. Now the underlying tech is working OK it's time to try and polish these tools up so they are as useful as possible in real artworks.

Here's another example of the cutting in action. This shape would be a pain to make all at once - but can be made simply but cutting two easy to make objects. Once cut you can easily thicken this sheet mesh out into a thicker solid (Duplicate, Flip and Stitch)
