SubD Objects

I'm adding a new primitive, the SubD object. You can draw a low poly mesh (or retopo a hires sculpt) and then see the results on the subdivided model as you edit.

Here is an example:

Very interesting work going on here

The low poly mesh only has 340 verts so it is easy to edit into new shapes while keeping the surface smooth and well formed - it's a different feel compared to using sculpting brushes on a hi-poly mesh.

Another practice head using SubDs. This one has a high contrast lightmap to reveal the shape of the surface more clearly.

There is a rough video of hires sculpting and SuB modelling in the Curvy 5 Beta here :

Here is a very quick hand model made from a thin SubD shape with added thickness. Avoids needing to do tricky joins on each finger and gives a smooth well formed result ready for further SubD work, or hires sculpting.

Added a new wireframe mode that shows how the surface is subdivided. Makes it easier to understand the mesh topology.

There is a new panel of tools for SubD modelling in Curvy 3D 5.0.09. To get started you should create a Sphere and scale the resolution down to 48 tris.

Then use the Mesh Grab tool to move a point on the sphere - this turns the object into a SubD object. You also need to turn on Subdivision in the Obj Props panel.

Coming next in Curvy 3D 5.0.10 there are a couple of new primitives for Plane and SubD Cube that offer good starting points for making SubD models. Also the new curved wireframe mode will have a button in the toolbar.

Same topology, this time with an anime style head. SubDs for the hair shapes too.

Another head with the same topology as before, it is very quick to reproportion a SubD mesh to fit a new design.

More heads from the same topology:

If you have the latest Beta 5 you can download these objects and perhaps try making your own heads from this base.
